Oliver Sacks Video

By Dr. Stephen Soldz

The great neurologist Oliver Sacks, who died last weekend, was a great friend of psychoanalysis. In this 2011 interview he describes his own psychoanalysis, which at that point had extended for 46 years, as “one of the longest analyses on record.” With wry humor Sacks continued: “we’re beginning to get somewhere now.” Sacks goes on to describe the importance of maintaining proprieties such as use of last names between analyst and patient as a way of creating a safe environment that facilitates free communication.download
