BGSP Faculty Member Awarded 2023 Mental Health Counselor Educator of the Year

Dr. William Sharp has been named 2023 Mental Health Counselor Educator of the Year by the Massachusetts Mental Health Counselors Association (MaMHCA). MaMHCA is a non-profit professional association in Massachusetts dedicated to providing professional assistance to mental health counseling students, mental health counseling educators, Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) and other related professionals. Each year, MaMHCA selects the Mental Health Counselor Educator of the year in recognition of outstanding humanitarian service to graduate students in academia.

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Sharp has been on the faculty of BGSP since 2011 and directed the MA program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from 2019 through the Spring 2023 semester. There, he was instrumental in moving students through the practicum and internship experiences, creating a three-semester curriculum that focused on case work from assessment and diagnosis through termination. He is prized for his skill at providing a contained environment where students can explore the lives of the people they work with, as well as their own emotional lives and professional identity as mental health counselors.

Dr. Sharp has had a remarkable impact on developing the professional identity of BGSP’s MA program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling as a robust counseling program that maintains a psychoanalytic lens on clinical work. He continues to supervise students, LMHCs, social workers, and psychologists in his private practice, and is an Associate Teaching Professor in Northeastern University’s Department of Psychology.
