Songs Are Like Tattoos: Social Critique and Literary Artistry in Joni Mitchell’s Blue

This presentation explores a feminist literary close reading of Joni Mitchell’s 1971 album Blue, highlighting
the female poet-musician’s own reading of the 1960’s counter-cultural era and its effect on her creative
experience. It will also address the roots of this creative experience from a psychoanalytic perspective.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Sarah Gates, is Associate Professor of English and Chair of the English Department
at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. She has a special interest in psychoanalytic literary criticism,
and has studied and presented at BGSP.
Discussant: Mara Sanadi Wagner, Psy.D., Cert.Psya. is on the faculty at BGSP where she teaches
Psychoanalysis and the Arts and Women’s Voices in Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism, as well as clinical
courses. She is also adjunct faculty at Mass College of Art and Design.
