Here and Now: A Day of Experiential Groups

April 6 @ 8:30 am 5:00 pm

Co-sponsored by
the Northeastern Society for Group Psychotherapy and the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis

There is no better way to learn about group process and leadership than to be in an experiential group with a clear contract and well-articulated boundaries and an experienced leader. This makes it a secure and effective environment to learn both about  groups and oneself; it also means that the emotional experience can be intense. While these groups are process groups, they are not psychotherapy. This full day event involves experiential groups, limited to 12 members each, which offer the opportunity to reflect on both oneself as a member and the work of the leader. A brief period of didactic material and discussion will follow the experiential component of the day.

Participants choose to commit to a Special Interest Group or a General Experience Group. Register for one group below.

Group 1: Locating Oneself in an Expanding World

Group Leader: Sara Emerson, LICSW, CGP

Groups provide a unique opportunity to explore, examine, and experience oneself in relation to others. It affords the challenge of exploring differences to be open to alternatives in identity and self definition. In this experience group we will work to open dialogue around differences in gender identification, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, race, and ethnicity.

Sara Emerson, LICSW, is in private practice in Cambridge, MA where she works with individuals and groups. She has been actively involved in NSGP and AGPA as a presenter,, as well as at EGPS and NCGS. She is a past president of NSGP and currently on the Institute committee at AGPA Connect. She has trained at MIP, where she is currently on the Training Committee.

Registration closes Monday, April 1st at 11:59pm.

OBJECTIVES:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explore and identify in themselves their own understanding of difference, acceptance and tolerance.
  2. Examine and explore their own world view, view of self and other and the origins of these definitions
  3. Examine and understand how their self definition and worldview impacts their clinical practice with groups.

Group 2: Entering the Heart of Group Psychotherapy

Group Leader: Corey Flanders, LMHC, CGP

In this group, we will consider the most available doorway to the here and now–our felt connection with our essential nature. Participants will be guided through short (10 minutes) awareness-based meditations at the start of each one and a half hour process group session. Together we will explore what effect this might have on both group content and group process. Do short meditations help participants delve into the present, here-and-now dimension of group? Do they facilitate connection with one’s inner emotional experience and/or other group members?

Corey Flanders, LMHC, CGP, is a group psychotherapist from Providence, Rhode Island who studies and practices modern group analysis in connection with the training program at the Center for Group Studies in NYC. Corey has 30 years experience in tantric, experiential meditation traditions including Dzogchen Buddhism and Shakta-Shaivism lineage streams. He seeks to understand how deepening one’s felt connection with our inmost nature may impact one’s way of being in group, especially as a facilitator.

Registration closes Monday, April 1st at 11:59pm.

OBJECTIVES:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Consider what effect simple awareness meditation has on their experience of being a group member.
  2. Explore whether such experiences increases or decreases their availability to their emotional experience.
  3. Explore the similarities and differences between the individual and group dimensions of the here-and-now.

Group 3: General Experience Group

Group Leaders: William Sharp, PsyaD, CGP and Leah Alexander, PsyaD

The general group experience allows the members’ wishes to emerge and unfold and creates a space for relationships and self to be better understood.

William Sharp, PsyaD, CGP, is a teacher and in private practice where he consults with individuals, families, and other groups. He has been running groups for the last 20 years in schools and in Brookline Village. He has taught the Group Dynamics course at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis and trained at the Center for Group Studies in NYC. He has previously published in the International Journal of Group Psychotherapy and GROUP (the journal of the Eastern Group Psychotherapy association). He is currently the treasurer for the Northeastern Society for Group Psychotherapy (NSGP).

Leah Alexander, PsyaD, is on the faculty at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis where she is the Assistant Director of the Therapy Center and teaches and supervises students. She is in private practice in Topsfield, MA where she has had the pleasure of running a psychoanalytic group for thirteen years.
