Child’s Play | Part of the “Playing to Grow” Two-Part Series

Although play is natural for children, pressures for more structured learning time in the classroom combined with access to more screen time, stand in the way of maximizing playtime. All caretakers play a vital role in making room for many types of play, including encouraging the use of fantasy to meet developmental needs at all ages.

Meet the Discussion Leaders

Jane Snyder, Ph.D., Cert. Psya. is Provost and a supervising and training analyst at BGSP, where she has worked with students for over 40 years. She has presented and written extensively on various topics, blending her psychoanalytic knowledge and background in developmental psychology and work with children.

Vanessa Cid, MEd. has been an early childhood educator in the Boston area for over thirteen years. She received her master’s degree in Elementary Education from UMass Boston through the Boston Teacher Residency Program. She received a CAGS certificate in child and adolescent intervention through the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis to enhance her knowledge of how conscious and unconscious influences on human development, motivation, and interpersonal interactions affect a child’s intellectual and emotional learning. She is particularly interested in how play, and in particular fantasy play, is used by children to understand and navigate the world, as well as to provide psychic relief.

OBJECTIVES

The participant will be able to:

  • Discuss and list three types of play and the function they may play in child development.
  • List three different types of fantasy that children use and give examples of what fantasy provides for the child. List examples from two age groups.
  • Discuss and list barriers to children playing. List how a consultant may work with a teacher or parents to facilitate the child’s play.

BGSP is authorized to provide CEs for: Psychologists (all levels), Social Workers, Counselors

Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. BGSP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 5676. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
