BGSP’s 34th Annual Cape Conference

Tuesday, July 31

Session 1:
What About Love?
Dr. Snyder will lead a discussion introducing the role of love in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically informed work.  Does love cure? Can it get in the way? What is love anyway? How is love related to other feelings?  Do modern psychoanalysts neglect love? Participants are encouraged to bring their own questions and case examples to share throughout the week.

Session 2:
Where is the Love at BGSP?
A student panel discussion exploring the expression of love among BGSP students and between BGSP students and faculty.

Evening Event: Wine & Oysters, Dr. Snyder’s House, 5:30-7:30

Objectives
The participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the role of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically informed work.
  • Discuss questions of love in cure, or obstructing cure; what is the nature of love; how is love related to other feelings?
  • Apply the concepts of love discussed to case material and life experience.

 

Wednesday, August 1

Session 1:
When, Where, and What is Love: Evolutionary, Neuroscientific, and Psychological Perspectives.
How do we understand the brain’s role in primary emotions and in the more complex secondary emotion of love?

Discussant: Marjorie Goodwin, PMHCNS, Psya.D.

Session 2:
What is love anyway? And what is love in modern psychoanalysis?
Dr. Shepherd discusses the role positive affect plays in the theory, technique and practice of psychoanalysis.

Presenter: Mary Shepherd, Psya.D.

Evening Event: Barbecue hosted by the Student Association

Objectives
The participant will be able to:

  • Discuss the brain’s role in primary emotional and in the more complex secondary emotion of love.
  • Discuss the role that positive affect plays in the theory, technique and practice of psychoanalysis.
  • Apply the role of positive affect to clinical work.

Thursday, August 2

Session 1
Love of Things
Do things substitute for people in the unconscious?  Or do people substitute for things?  Evolutionary psychology and psychoanalysis offer complementary perspectives on the emotional significance of inanimate objects.

Presenter: Eugene Goldwater, M.D., Cert. Psya.

Session 2:
Eros:  What’s Love Got to do with it?   (Paper by Elizabeth Dorsey, MSW, Cert.Psya.)

What are internal and societal inhibitions to life instincts in the modern world?
How is love considered in couples treatment?
Case Presentations: John Miele, Ph.D. and Patricia Hugenberger, Psya.D.

Evening Activity: Bonfire on the Beach, hosted by the Student Association

Objectives
The participant will be able to:

  • Discuss the emotional significance of inanimate objects and discuss the question of whether things substitute for people in the unconscious.
  • Discuss how love is considered in couples treatment.
  • Discuss different approaches to working with couples as presented and apply to one’s own work.

Friday, August 3

Session 1:
A Study in the Resistance to Love.  A Case presentation by a Doctoral Candidate at BGSP.

Session 2:
Endings: Closure and wrap up for the week

Presenter: Lynn Perlman, Ph.D., Cert.Psya.

Objectives
The participant will be able to:

  • Discuss the role of resistance to love as to how it may affect having children.
  • Discuss what contributes to resistance to loving one’s partner.
  • Discuss how the resistances to love were resolved in case presented and how this might apply to one’s own clinical work.

Fee: $35.00 per day. $120.00 for the week
3 CE Credits/Clock Hours per day
