I began my travels to Boston in 1981 when I assumed the presidency of the Boston Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies (BCMPS), succeeding Wilfred Calmas, who with Ethel Clevans, Jack Green and Phyllis Meadow, founded this first Modern Psychoanalytic institute in New England. I was asked to aid in the efforts, then underway, to develop a program that would lead to an accredited degree in psychoanalysis at the doctoral level. The BCMPS has grown in the following years into the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis (BGSP) and has accomplished this unique feature of offering both the doctorate and masters degree and the school is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). My tenure as president was made possible because of my background as an educator with experience as a school administrator and high school principal prior to my full time devotion to psychoanalysis.
My commitment to this profession has provided me the opportunity to fill many positions at BGSP from Admissions Director, Dean of Students, to Chair of the Certificate Program and to teach, supervise, lecture, write, conduct training and control analyses and chair and serve on working committees of the school.
My personal viewpoint of the profession of psychoanalysis and the training and education of future analysts is that the field is best nourished by the inclusion of all kinds of people from different backgrounds...doctors, scientists, mental health professionals, educators, artists, engineers, medical arts professionals, poets alike as well as homemakers and others, should all be welcomed to study this remarkable process. I believe that the profession of psychoanalysis should be as diverse in its makeup as the condition of all humanity and it should reflect the widest array of people possible.
