Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS)
CAGS in PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY
The CAGS in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy is designed for clinicians who already have a master's degree or higher who would like training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. It introduces the student to fundamental concepts specific to psychoanalytic theory and practice and provides a specialized understanding of psychoanalytic psychotherapy and intervention, with an emphasis on severe mental disorders such as borderline and schizophrenic personalities. The 42-credit program takes three semesters (full-time) to complete.
Students in this program participate in a field experience that introduces them to primitive mental states such as psychosis. Depending on a student's professional experience, s/he may use his or her existing practice as a field placement, or the student may find a placement through the School. In either case, students participate in an ongoing case seminar specifically for CAGS students, as well as individual and group clinical supervision. Students are required to engage in a training analysis throughout the program.
Graduates of the CAGS program will be eligible to apply directly to the Candidacy level of the Doctor of Psychoanalysis (Psya.D.) program.
- Successful completion of the 42-credit curriculum
- Successful completion of 400-hour Field Placement Externship with accompanying supervision groups
Students in this CAGS program will complete a three semester Field Placement Externship. (Depending on a student's professional experience, s/he may use his or her existing practice as a field placement.) The externship offers direct contact with regressed patients in mental hospitals or comparable settings, giving students the opportunity to observe extremes of pathology at the earliest levels of fixation or regression. The Field Placement Externship includes 400 hours in placement-related activities, including ongoing individual contacts with psychotic patients, administrative supervision and team meetings.
