GRADUATES OF THE DOCTORAL PROGRAM
Dr. Gilhooley completed his Certificate in Psychoanalysis at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies in Manhattan, his Master’s in Psychoanalysis at BGSP, and his Doctorate in Psychoanalysis at the Vermont Graduate School of Psychoanalysis, a branch of BGSP. Since 2000 he has been in private practice in NYC and on Long Island working with children, adults and families in individual and group modalities.
In addition Dr. Gilhooley has worked, for the past 25 years, at a large (22,000 student), tri-campus community college on Long Island where he has served in several administrative and teaching positions. He is the recipient of SUNY Chancellor Awards for both Professional (administrative) and Teaching Excellence.
As a visual artist, his first Master’s was in fine art; Dr. Gilhooley has participated on a national level in over 125 group shows and has held 18 one-person exhibitions. The Fall 2005 issue of Drawing Magazine contained a 16-page feature article on his work highlighting his association of art and psychotherapy. In 1991 he was elected to the National Academy of Design, the nation's oldest member-elect visual arts organization. In 1995 he received a Gradiva Award for Art Contributing to an Understanding of Psychoanalysis.
“As a practicing visual artist, when I began to do psychoanalytic research, I wanted to study creativity as it occurs in psychoanalytic sessions. In my doctoral work at VGSP, I chose to study the changing patterns of thought occurring in the minds of patients in sessions as represented in their words. Ultimately what I wanted to study in psychoanalytic sessions was such creative moments to understand how they occur, to discover what precedes them, and to see what they develop into.”
Dr. Gilhooley has presented papers on his research at several conferences of the Society for Psychotherapy Research. His research won the Vermont Association for Psychoanalytic Studies first annual Research Award. In addition, he participated in the Psychoanalytic Research Training Program sponsored by the Anna Freud Centre/Yale Child Study Center and the Western New England Psychoanalytic Institute.
